As the temperature raised gradually above 273 K, more and more water molecules start coming closer resulting in decrease in volume and hence increase in density. Water is the only substance where the maximum density does not occur when solidified. As ice is lighter than water, it floats. But at approximately `4^@C` (277 K), pure water reaches its maximum density. As it is cooled further, it expands to become less dense. Hence, density of water is maximum at 277 K.
