A gas mixture coinsists of (2) moles of oxygen and (4) moles of argon at temperature (T). Neglecting all vibrational modes, the total internal energy of the system is (jee 1999)
(a) 4 RT (b) 15 RT ( c) 9 RT (d) 11 RT.

The correct Answer is:
D

Internal energy of (n) moles of an ideal gas at temperature (T) is given by
`U = n(f/2 RT)`
where, (f) = degress of freedom
= `5 for O_2 and 3 for Ar`
Hence, `U = U_(o 2 + U _(Ar)`
= `2(5/2 R T) + 4(3/2 RT)`
= `11 R T`.
