Why is dioxygen a gas but sulphur a solid ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Dioxygen is a gas but sulphur a solid.
Explanation :
`to` Due to small atomic size and high electronegativity oxygen forms `P pi-P pi` multiple bond and exists as `O_(2)` molecules held together by weak vander waal's forces. Thus oxygen exists as a gas at room temperature.
`to` Due to large atomic size and less electronegativity sulphur forms strong S-S single bonds and exists as `S_(8)` molecules with puckered ring structure. Hence sulphur is a solid at room temperature.
