Glucose or sucrose are soluble in water ...

Glucose or sucrose are soluble in water but cyclohexane and benzene (simple six membered ring compound are insoluble in water. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In glucose `(C_6H_12O_6)` groups are present and in sucrose `(C_12H_22O_11)` , B-OH groups are present , which are polar in nature. They are involved in intermolecular hydrogen bonding with water molecules , so these compound are readily soluble in water. Benzene `(C_6H_6)` and cyclohexane `(C_6H_12)` are hydrocarbons . They do not have any polar group so they cannot make hydrogen bonds with water. Therefore, they are insoluble in water.
