Why is ammeter connected in series and voltmeter in parallel in the circuit?

Text Solution

In series, `I` is same for all elements, so if an ammeter is
connect in series with a resistance `R`, its reading will be
equal to the current through `R`(as shows in Fig. S6.1).

Similarly, in parallel, `V` is same for all elements. So if a
voltmter is connected in parellel with a resistance `R`, potential
difference across it will be same that across `R`. This is why
an ammeter is always connected in series, while a voltmeter is
connected in parellel with the element to measure `I` (through it ) and `V` (across it).

How is the ammeter connected in the circuit?

How is ammeter always connected in circuits?

Assertion : An ammeter is always connected in series whereas a voltmeter is connected in parallel. Reason : An ammeter is a low-resistance galvanometer while a voltmeter is high resistance galvanometer.

Assertion (A) : An ammeter is connected in series of the current carrying circuit but a voltmeter is connected in parallel across those two points, potential difference between which is to be measured. Reason (R) : Resistance of an ideal ammeter is zero but the resistance of an ideal voltmeter is infinite.

When an ammeter is connected in parallel the resistance of the circuit is
