Burning magnesium continues to burn in n...

Burning magnesium continues to burn in nitric oxide, while burning sulphur is extinguised. Give reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The reaction between magnesium and oxygen is highly exothermic, i.e. the heat evolved is enough to decompose `NO` into `N_2` and `O_2`, while the heat envolved during sulphur is not sufficient to decompose `NO`. Hence, buring `Mg` continues to burn in `NO`, but burning `S` is extinguished.
