Homolytic reactions involve homolytic cleavage where the two electrons of the bond shift in either direction giving odd electron species called free radicals as intermediates.

Such an electron shift is shwon by two fish hooks starting from the middle of the bond and ending on either by heating by irradiation with light. Formation of free radicals is initiated by radical initiators such as peroxides. Since free radicals are neutral species, their formation is favoured by nonpolar solvents.
