Which of the following atoms/groups exerts `-I` effect when attached to a carbon atom?

A

`-NH_(2)`

B

`-F`

C

`-NO_(2)`

D

all of these

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
D

The inductive effect of a substituent affects the charge or electron density on `C` Electronegative groups such as halogens tend to withdraw electron density from `C` whereas electropositive groups such as alkyl groups tend to increase its electron density. The effect is transmitted through the chain of `sigma` bonds and diminished with increasing chain length. All these substituents exert`-I` effect as they are more electronegative than the `H` atom.

Which of the following groups exerts +m effect when attached with benzene ring?

Which of the following compounds does NOT contain atleast two primary carbon atoms and two primary alcoholic groups ?

Identification of +m & -m groups : If the first atom of the group has lone pair or negative charge shows +m effect. +m group increases electron density at ortho and para position of benzene ring. If the group has vacant p- orbital on first atom, also a multipal bonded group in which second atom is more electronegative than the first then it shows -m effect. -m group decreases electron density of ortho and para position of benzene ring. Identify which of following group/s show -m effect when attached with benzene ring.
