The correct Answer is:
4

In the presence of `FeBr_(3)` (a lewis acid),ethylbenzene reacts with `Br_(2)` to give a mixture of ortho-and para--substituted products. The ortho and para directing influence of ethyl group is due to its inductive effect which influences different C's of ring in theorder: `o gt m gt -` and its hyperconjugation effect which influences ortho and para carbon atoms equally but does not influence the meta position. thus, we expect ortho compound to be the major product but on account of steric hindrance by `CH_(3)CH_(2)-` group at the ortho position, the major product is para compounds.
