Why does acetylation of - `NH_2` group of aniline reduce its activity effect?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Due to electron-withdrawing effect of the acetyl group, the lone pair of electrons on N-atom is attracted by by C=O group. As a result, lone apir of elecrons on N-atom is not exclusively available for donation to the benzene ring and hence activating effect of the `NH_(2)` group is reduced.

Why does acylation of -NH_(2) of aniline reduces its activating effect?

Give reasons : Acetylation of aniline reduces its activation effect.

Give reasons for the following (a) Acetylation of aniline reduces its activation effect. (b) CH_(3)NH_(2) is more basic than C_(6)H_(5)NH_(2) . (c) Although -NH_(2) is o/p directing group, yet aniline on nitration gives a significant amount of m-nitroaniline.

Assertion: Aniline does not undergo Friedel-Crafts reactions. Reason: -NH_2 group of aniline reacts with AlCl_3 to give acid-base reaction.
