Explain the mechanism of Friedel craft alkylation of benzene.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Friedel - Craft alkylation reaction benzene reacts with methyl chloride in presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride to form toluene. This is called Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction.

The mechanism of Friedel Craft's alkylation reaction involves the followin step:
Step 1 : Generation of electrophile `CH_(3)^(+)`
`CH_(3) - Cl + AlCl_(3) rarr CH_(3)^(+) + AlCl_(4)^(-)`
Steps : The electrophile `CH_(4)^(+)` attacks the benzene ring to form a carbocation which is resonance stabilized.

Stpes 3 : Loss of a proton to give toluene.
