The concentration of R in the reaction R...

The concentration of `R` in the reaction `R rarr P` was measured as a function of time and the following data were obtained. What is the order of the reaction?
`|{:([R] (mol),1.0,0.75,0.40,0.10),(T (min),0.0,0.05,0.12,0.18):}|`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
`(A) rarr0`

Rate of reaction in the interval of 0.05 to 0.12 min
`=(1.0-0.75)/(0.05)= 5 "mol L"^(-1)"min"^(-1)`
Rate of reaction in the interval 0.05 to 0.12 min
`=(0.75-0.40)/(0.12-0.05)=5 "mol L"^(-1)"min"^(-1)`
Rate of reaction in the interval 0.12 ot 0.18 min
`=(0.40-0.10)/(0.18-0.12)=5 "mol L"^(-1)"min"^(-1)`
The rate of reaction remains constant irrespective the change of concentrations. Hence it is a reaction of zero order
Alternatively, for zero reaction, `k=(x)/(t)` and k comes out to be constant.
