Moelcules in air in the atmosphere are attracted by gravitational force of the earth. Explain why all of them do not fall into the earth just like an apple falling from a tree.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Air molecules in the atmosphere are attracted vertically downwards by gravitational force of the earth just like an apple falling from a tree. Air molecules move randomly due to their thermal velocity and hence the resultant motion of air molecules is not exactly in the vertical downward direction.
But in case of apple, only vertical motion dominates because of being heavier than air molecules. But due to gravity, the density of atmosphere increases near to the earth's surface

The Earth and the moon are attracted to each other by each other by gravitational force. Does the earth attract the moon with a force that is greater or smaller or the same as the force with which the moon attracts the earth ? Why?

The gravitational force exerted by the Sun on the Moon is about twice as great as the gravitational force exerted by the earth on the Moon, but still Moon is not escaping from the gravitational influence of the earth. Mark the option which correctly explains the above system.
