Explain the effect of electron withdrawing groups. [EWG] on the acidity of carboxylic acids. Give examples.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electron withdrawing groups [EWG] increases the acidity of carboxylic acids by stabilising the carboxylate ion (conjugate base) through delocalisation of the negative charge by and l or resonance effect.
Examples : (a) Chloroacetic acids is more acidic than acetic acid due to the presnece of EWG of Cl.
`ClCH_(2) COOH gt CH_(2) COOH`
(b) Benzoic acids is more acidic than acetic due to the presence of EWG of Phenyl group.
`C_(6)H_(5)COOH gt CH_(3) COOH`
