Analyses shows that FeO has a non-stoichiometric composition with formula `Fe_(0.95)O_(1.00)`. Give reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In FeO , some `Fe^(2+)` ions are replaced by `Fe^(3)` ions i.e., `3Fe^(2+) -= 2 Fe^(3+)` to maintain electrical neutrality. Hence , due to metal deficiency , the compounds obtained are non-stoichiometric composition with formula `Fe_(0.95)O`.
