The molecular speeds of gaseous molecule...

The molecular speeds of gaseous molecules are analogous to those to rifle bullets , why do then odour of the gaseous molecular not detected so fast ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Even though the speeds of gaseous molecules are analogous to those of rifle bullets, these do no move in a straight path like bullets. Therefore, the molecules undergo collisions with one another at a very fast rate the follow zig - zag path. As a result, the odour cannot be detected at the same speed at which the molecules move.
