What are ribozymes ?...

What are ribozymes ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ribozymes are RNA molecules that function as biocatalsts in modern cells (Thomas Cech, 1980s). This fact disproves the long-held view that only proteins (enzymes) act as biological catalysts. Ribozymes catalyse synthesis of RNAs : rRNA, tRNA, mRNA (autocatalysis) and removal of introns from mRNA.
