Why is the Human Genome project called a mega project?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Human Genome Project (HGP) was called a mega project because it had involved a lot of money, most advanced technologies, numerous computers, many scientists and a long span of time. The magnitude of the project can be imagined by visualising that it was aimed to find out.the complete DNA sequence of human genome which is said to have approximately `3xx10^(9)bp`. The cost of the project can be imagined that if the cost of sequencing a bp is 3 dollars, sequencing of `3xx10^(9) bp` would be a billion dollars. Further, if the data is to be stored in books, with each book having 1000 pages and each page having 1000 letters,' some 3300 books will be required. Thus, high speed computational devices were' used for storing and analysing the data.

Why 'Human Genome Project’ is called Mega Projects’?

Assertion (A): Human genome project was called a mega project. Reason (R): Human genome has approximately 3 xx 10^9 bp, and if the cost of sequencing required is US $ 3 per bp, the total estimated cost of the project would be approximately 9 bilUon US dollars.

Why is human genome called a mega project?

Assertion. Human Genome Project was a mega project launched to find out the complete DNA sequence of human genome. Reason. It was possible only with the help of genetic engineering techniques to isolate and clone any piece of DNA and fast techniques for determining DNA sequences.
