Can PCl5 act as an oxidising as well as ...

Can `PCl_5` act as an oxidising as well as a reducing agent ? Justify.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Phosphorus shows maximum oxidation state of (+5). Hence, it cannot be further oxidized to higher oxidation state than (+5). Thus, `PCl_(5)` cannot act as reducing agent. However oxidation number of phosphorus can be decreased from (+5) to (+3). Thus `PCl_5` can act as a reducing agent.
`underset(0)(2Ag) + underset(+5)(PCl_(5)) to underset(+1)(2AgCl) + underset(+3)(PCl_(3))`
`underset(0)(Sn) + underset(+5)(2PCl_(5)) to underset(+4)(SnCl_(4)) + underset(+3)(2PCl_(3))`
