Reaction of metals with water.
(i) With cold water:
Sodium reacts vigorously with cold water and forms sodium hydroxide and hydrogen
`2Na(s)+underset("cold")(2H_(2)O(l))to2NaOH(aq)+H_(2)(g)`
(ii) With hot water
Magnesium reacts with hot water to form magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen
`Mg(s)+underset("Hot")(2H_(2)O)(I)toMg(OH_(2)(aq)+H_(2)(g)`
(iii) With steam:
When steam is passed over red hotiron it forms ferric oxide (III) liberating hydrogen
`underset("Red hot")(3Fe(s))+underset("Steam")(3H_(2)O(I))tounderset("Iron"(III)"Oxide")(Fe_(2)O_(3)(s))+3H_(2)(g)uarr`
`3Fe(s)+underset("Steam")(4H_(2)O)(I)tounderset("Iron (II,III)oxide")(Fe_(2)O_(3))+4H_(2)(g)uarr`
Gold and silver do not react with any form of water.

Some metals react with water and produce metal oxides or hydroxides and liberated hydrogen gas. Metals like sodium and potassium react violently with cold water. However, calcium reacts less violently with cold water because it is less reactive as compared to Na and K. Magnesium does not react with cold water. It reacts with hot water to form magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
