Covalent compounds are soluble in

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Glucose (a monosaccharide with a six membered ring structure) and sucrose (a disaccharide with a sis membered ring structure of glucose unit and fructose unit having a five membered ring structure) have a large number of -OH groups. These -OH groups from H, bonds with water, when these sugars are dissolved in water. Due to this extensive intermolecular H-bonding, glucose and sucrose are soluble in water. On the other hand, simple six membered ring compounds like cyclohexane or benzene are insoluble in water as H-bonding of these compounds with water in not possible. It is due to the absence of -OH groups in these compounds.
