Statement 1: A solution of sucrose in water is dextrorotatory but on hydrolysis in presence of little hydrochloride acid, it becomes laevorotatory.
Statement 2: Sucrose on hydrolysis gives unequal amounts of glucose and fructose as a result of which change in sign of rotation is observed.

A

Statement 1 is True, Statement 2 is True, Statement 2 is Correct explanation for Statement 1.

B

Statement 1 is True, Statement 2 is True, Statement 2 is NOT a correct explanation for Statement 1.

C

Statement 1 is True, Statement 2 is False.

D

Statement 1 is False, Statement 2 is True.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Sucrose on hydrolysis gives equal amounts of glucose and fructose. Since glucose has less positive and fructose has more negative magnitude of rotation, therefore, change in sign of rotation is observed.

Hydrogen peroxide can be prepared by the action of dil. H_(2),SO_(4), "or" H_(2),PO_(4) , on barium peroxide or by bubbling carbon dioxide through a thin paste of barium peroxide. On an industrial scale, it can be prepared by hydrolysis of peroxodisulphric acid obtained by electrolysis of 50% H_(2),SO_(4) , or an equimolar mixture of H_(2),SO_(4) , and ammonium sulphate. The strength of H_(2),O_(2) , solution can be expressed in a number of ways, namely normality, molarity, percentage strength and volume strength. Volume strength refers to the volume of O_(2) , produced at NTP by decomposition of 1 mL of H_(2),O_(2) , solution. H_(2),O_(2) , acts as an oxidising as well as a reducing agent both in acidic and basic media. Which of the following substances on treatment with H_(2),O_(2) , gives MnO_(2) .
