Names of organic compounds are under the...

Names of organic compounds are under the latest guide line of IUPAC IUPAC means international union of pure and applied chemistry. The main rules are longest chain rule, lowest number rule etc. We have to include the rules for naming the substituetns, multiple bonds and even functional groups.

Describe the IUPAC rules of naming organic compounds.

Write the IUPAC names of the following alkanes: (i) (CH_(3))_(2)CHCH_(2)CH_(3) (ii) (CH_(3))_(2)CH-CH(CH_(3))_(2) (iii) (CH_(3)CH_(2))_(2)CH-CH(CH_(3))_(2) ltbr (iv) CH_(3)CH_(2)underset(CH_(3))underset(|)(CH)CH_(3)underset((CH_(2))_(2)CH_(3))underset(|)(CHCHCH_(3)CH)(CH_(3))_(2) (v) (CH_(3))_(2)CHCH_(2)CHCH_(3)CH(CH_(3))_(2) (vi) (CH_(3))_(3)C CH_(2)C(CH_(3))_(2) (vii) (viii) Isobutane (ix) Neopentane (x) Isooctane (xi) (xii) (xiii) (xiv) (xv) 4 -tert-Butyloctane Strategy: Open up the structure if brancehes are present. Select the longest possible continous C chain carrying the maximum number of branches as the parent chain. Number the parent chain using the smallest possible number or lowest set of locants for the substituents (s) . Assign the name and position number to each and every substituents. Write the name as a single word. Use hyphens to seperate numbers and letters. Do not leave any spaces.

Knowledge Check

  • The IUPAC name of any organic compound consists of four parts, i.e., word root, primary and secondary suffixes and prefixes. The word root denotes the total number of carbon atoms in the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms present in the molecule. The primary suffix denotes whether the compound is saturated (i.e., ane) or unsaturated (i.e., ene or yne) while the secondary suffix denotes the functional group present in the molecule. The primary prefix cyclo is used only when the compound is cyclic in nature while the secondary prefixes denote the substituents and secondary functional groups, if any. The IUPAC name of the compound CH_(3)-CH_(2)-CH_(2)-CH_(2)-OH is

    A
    butanol
    B
    butanal
    C
    butene
    D
    propanol

If the organic compound contains more than two similar terminal groups and all of them are directly attached to the principal chain, then none of them forms a part of the principal chain. Special suffixes are used to name these. {:("Functional group", "Suffix"),(-CONH_(2), "Carboxamide"),(-CN, "Carbonitrile"),(-CHO, "Carbaldehyde"),(-COOH, "Carboxylic acid"):} Carbon atoms of these terminal groups are not counted in the principal chain. If any one of these terminal groups is not directly attached to the parent chain and forms the part of side chain, then the longest chain is selected containing two such similar groups at its two ends. Assertion : IUPAC name of compound CH_(3)CH=CH-CHO is but-2-enal. Reason : Functional group gets preference over multiple bond in the IUPAC name of a compound.

In IUPAC system of naming of organic compounds. Which of the following functional group has more preference than other ( in a poly functional compound)
