Silver atom has completely filled d orbi...

Silver atom has completely filled `d` orbitals `(4d^(10))` in its ground state. How can you say it is a transition element?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The outer electronic configuration of `Ag(Z = 47)` is `4d^(10) 5s^(1)` .In addition to `+1` , it shows an oxidation state of `+2` ( e.g., `AgO` and `AgF_(2)` exist ) . In `+2` oxidation state, the configuration is `d^(9)` , i.e., the d-subshell is incompletely filled. Hence, it is a transition element.
