Which of the following transition metals of 4d series has the lowest melting point?

A

`Ti(Z= 22)`

B

`V(Z= 23)`

C

`Cr(Z= 24)`

D

`Mn(Z=25)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

In the first transition series,Mn has abnormally low melting point. This is due to the fact that Mn has exactly half-filled d-orbitals.As a result, electronic configuration is very stable, i.e., electrons areheldtightly by the nucleus so that the delocatization is less and the metallic bond is much weaker than the elements on its either side.
