Why phosphorus is more reactive than nitrogen?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In phosphorous molecule `P_4` the angle `anglePPP=60^@`. Due to high angular strain phosphorous is highly reactive, whereas nitrogen molecule, `N_2` exists as `N-=N` and hence due to triple bond very high bond dissociation energy is required and `N_2` is inert.
