Number of `Na^(+)` and `Cl^(-)` ions associated with each a unit cell of `NaCl` is:

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NaCl` has `fcc` structures `8` at the corners is shared by `8` unit cells. Each of `6 Na^(+)` ions at `fcc` is shared by `2` unit shell.
`:.` No. of `Na^(+)` in a each unit cell `=8/8+6/2=4`
`12 Cl^(-)` at the middle of each edge of cell is shared by `4` cell and `Cl^(-)` at the centre is wholly belong to it.
`:.` No. of `Cl^(-)` in unit cell `=12/4+1=4`

How many effiective Na^(+) and Cl^(-) ions are present respectively in a uint cell of NaCl solid (Rock salt structure ) if all ions along line connecting opposite face centres are absent ?

r_(Na^(+))" and " r_(Cl^(-)) represent radius of Na^(+) and Cl^(-) ions respectively. If 'n' is the number of NaCl units per cell then give the eqution you will use to obtain molar volume.

If the positions of Na^(+) and Cl^(-) are interchanged in NaCl, having fcc arrangement of Cl^(-) ions then in the unit cell of NaCl

Assertion. The sum of the radii of Na^(+) and Cl^(-) ions in NaCl cystal is 281 pm Hence, edge of the unit cell is 281 pm. Reason. Edge of the unit cell is the distance between the centres of Na^(+) and Cl^(-) ions touching each other.

How many Cl^(-) ions are there around Na^(+) ion in NaCl crystal ?
