When KMnO(4) reacts with acidified FeSO(...

When `KMnO_(4)` reacts with acidified `FeSO_(4)`

A

only `FeSO_(4)` is oxidised

B

only `KMnO_(4)` is oxidised

C

`FeSO_(4)` is oxidised and `KMnO_(4)`is reduced

D

none of the above

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

In acid medium
`2KMnO_(4)+3H_(2)SO_(4) to K_(2)SO_(4)+2MnSO_(4)+3H_(2)O+4O`
O.N. of Mn changes from `+7` to `+2` by gain of electrons hence it is reduction
`2FeSO_(4)+H_(2)SO_(4)+O to Fe_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)+H_(2)O`.
O.N. of Fe changes from `+2` to `+3` by loss of electrons, hence oxidation.
