Which of the following is soluble in aqueous sodium bicarbonate ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Unlike most phenols,`2,4`-dinitrophenol and `2,4,6`-trinitrophenol are soluble in aqueous sodium bicarbonate.Because of acid-strengthening nitro groups , the acidic strength of these phenols is high enough (`K_(a) values 10^(-4)` and "very large") to permit reaction with weakly basic `HCO_(3)^(-)`. Thus they liberate `CO_(2)` from `NaHCO_(3)`.
