Iodine is necessary for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland. Insufficient iodine in the diet leads to Goitre (enlargement of thyroid gland) Hence sodium or potassium iodate`//`iodine is added to table salt and this type of salt is known as 'iodised salt'.
