2, 4, 6-trimethylbenzoic acid is quite difficult to esterify. Assign reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In trimethylbenzoic acid, there are three electron releasing `CH_(3)` groups present. They tend to increase the electron density on the oxygen atom of O-H bond in carboxylic acid. As a result, the acidic strength is reduced considerably and it is not so easy to esterify 2, 4, 6-trimethylbenzoic acid.
