Food is the energy that drives all living things. From the tiny insect to the biggest animal, all creatures rely on food to grow, remain healthy, and perform daily functions. But have you ever wondered about where our food comes from? Well, it comes from different sources, classified based on different plants and animals and the nutrients they provide. In this lesson, we will be exploring these sources of food, along with the importance they hold to our bodies.
Food sources refer to the origin of everything we eat, whether it is a fruit, a vegetable, grains, or a piece of meat. Every source is different on the basis of the nutrients it provides. These nutrients help us stay healthy, grow steadily, and carry out daily activities. All food items come from either living or natural systems in our environment. Primarily, plants and animals are the two major sources of food examples in our environment.
Understanding the mode of nutrition in different animals is essential to comprehend how and from what food sources these animals get their food. All types of animals have their own mode of nutrition based on what they eat, which includes:
Food sources are mainly classified into three broad categories on the basis of origin, each of which provides a distinct set of nutritional value and importance. These three are:
Plant sources of food are derived from different edible parts of the plants. Plants are autotrophs, meaning they produce their own food through photosynthesis; hence, they serve as the primary producers in the food chain. Plant-based food sources can further be divided as:
Animal sources of food, as the name suggests, are the consumables that come from animals or their products. These sources are generally rich in protein, fats, and micronutrients, which are not easy to obtain from plant sources.
Although plants and animal sources of food are the major classifications of food sources, some of them don’t fit clearly in both of these categories, but are a significant contributor towards global nutrition. These are:
Fungi
The most common examples of a fungal food source are mushrooms and yeast. These are rich in fibre, antioxidants, selenium, and vitamin D. They are also used for medicinal and culinary purposes.
Algae
Many algae, such as seaweed and spirulina, are used as a food source on Earth as well as in space missions. These are generally rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, and vitamins. Sometimes, algae are also used as a dietary supplement.
Processed Foods
Processed foods are the modern form of plant and animal sources of food, which undergo processing to enhance flavour, texture, or shelf life. Bread, cheese, and canned vegetables are some of the most famous examples of processed foods.
Every food source, regardless of its origin, brings something that has an impact on our bodies. Therefore, different food sources have different importance for our bodies, some of which are:
