Two different gases at the same temperat...

Two different gases at the same temperature have equal root mean square velocities.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

No, when the two gases have exaclty the same temperature, the average kinetic energy per molecule `(=1/2 mC^(2)=3/2 kT)` for each gas is the same. But as the different gases may have molecules of different masses, the rms speed (C) of molecules of different gases shall be different.

The mass of a molecule of krypton is 2.25 times the mass of a hydrogen molecule. A mixture of equal masses of these gases is enclosed in a vessel. At any given temperature, the ratio of the root mean square velocities of krypton and hydrogen gases will be ______ .

Assertion : The de - Broglie wavelength of a molecule varies inversely as the square root of temperature. Reason : The root mean square velocity of the molecule depends on the temperature.
