NEET allows candidates to attempt the exam without any restrictions on the number of attempts. To be eligible for NEET, candidates must be at least 17 years old. This offline (pen and paper) three-hour examination requires candidates to meet specific eligibility criteria to apply.
For NEET 2025, aspiring candidates can submit their applications online if they are 17 years old or will reach this age by December 31, 2025. Notably, there is no upper age limit for appearing in the NEET UG exam, and candidates can attempt the exam as many times as they wish.
According to the National Testing Agency (NTA), the regulatory board for NEET exams, there is no restriction on the number of attempts for the NEET exams. This aligns with the statement on the official NEET website, which explicitly states, "There is no cap for the number of attempts." Additionally, CBSE has endorsed the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s letter number U.12023/16/2010-ME-II dated 6th December 2017, affirming that the previous limit on the number of attempts is no longer applicable.
In simpler terms, the earlier implied three-attempt rule by the CBSE is no longer in effect.
The chronological timeline of NEET attempts and regulatory changes from 2017 onwards:
According to the official notification outlining the eligibility criteria for NEET, the regulations are as follows:
Candidates should have reached the age of 17 by the time of admission or will attain this age on or before the 31st of December in the same year they seek admission to the first year of the Undergraduate Medical course.
Initially, there was a cap of 25 years on the examination date, with a 5-year relaxation for candidates belonging to categories like SC/ST/OBC-NCL and PwD. However, the current information indicates that there is presently no upper age limit. Any candidate who is 17 years old can participate in NEET without facing an upper age restriction, and there is no restriction on the number of attempts.
