For Class 7 students, the IMO offers a valuable opportunity to gauge their Mathematical competencies and challenge their understanding. The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) provides the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) as a test for students of class 1 to class 12. This contest tests Mathematical skills through two stages: Level 1 and Level 2. We are going to discuss the International Mathematics Olympiad specifically for Class 7 students in this article. We will discuss how to participate in the competition, including information on eligibility criteria, important dates for the exam, sample papers and other details.
1.0IMO Class 7 Structure: Exam Overview
- Level 1 is held in school premises during school hours as a 60-minute multiple-choice test.
- Students answer 50 questions in four sections: Logical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics, and the Achievers Section.
- Schools choose from three exam dates to fit their schedule.
- The medium is English, and the paper follows CBSE, ICSE/ISC, and State Board curricula.

The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) syllabus is designed to assess and challenge students' Mathematical abilities from Class 1 onwards. The problems become more challenging as students progress to higher grades, ensuring an exciting and suitable learning experience.
The new Syllabus has a similar format for all grades, with four parts in each class's question paper. For your reference, here is the Syllabus for the IMO 2026 Class 7.

6.0IMO Class 7 Eligibility Criteria
Level 1: Students of Class 7 enrolled in a school recognised by SOF. There is no minimum marks requirement.
Level 2: A student qualifies if they meet any one of these:
- Among the class-wise top 5% of Level 1 participants (international level).
- Among the top 25 rank holders in each class in each zone (zone/state level).
- The class topper, where at least 10 students from the class appeared and the topper scored at least 50% (school level).
7.0IMO Class 7 Exam Pattern 2026-27
The IMO Exam follows a multiple-choice question (MCQ) format. The International Mathematics Olympiad, which SOF organises, operates in two levels: Level 1 and Level 2.
Class 7 IMO Level 1 and Level 2 Exam Pattern
Level 1:
- The IMO Level 1 test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and takes one hour.
- The question paper consists of four sections: Logical Reasoning, Mathematical Reasoning, Everyday Mathematics, and the Achievers Section.
Level 2:
- The IMO Level 2 test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions.
- The question paper consists of two sections: Mathematics and Achievers Section
8.0How to Register for IMO Class 7 (2026-27)
Schools affiliated with SOF enrol their students. Individual registration is not accepted. Schools submit registrations at least 30 days before the chosen Level 1 date.
- Receiving materials: Registered schools receive the prospectus and forms. Unregistered schools can email info@sofworld.org or call 0124-4951200.
- Submission deadline: Schools submit completed forms for all participants by the due date.
- Handling by schools: Schools collect student applications and fees and forward them to SOF.
- Roll numbers: SOF assigns a unique roll number to each registered student.
IMO Registration Fee: ₹170 per student in India, Bhutan, and Nepal. The previous year's fee was ₹125.
9.0IMO Class 7 Admit Card
SOF sends admit cards to participating schools before the exam, and students collect them from school. Carry it on exam day.
10.0IMO Class 7 Answer Key, Cut-off and Result 2026-27
- Answer key: Released a few weeks after each Level 1 date.
- Level 1 result: Tentatively January 2027 (last year: 15 January 2026).
- Level 2 cut-off: SOF publishes it after Level 1 results (it was published for 2025-26).
- Level 2 result: Tentatively March 2027.

If two or more students secure the same rank, the cash prize for the relevant category will be divided as follows:
International Awards:
- Up to 9 students sharing a rank divide the prize money.
- Each also gets a category-specific medal and certificate.
- 10+ students sharing a rank get gifts worth Rs.1,000 each, plus a medal and certificate.
Zonal Awards:
- Up to 4 students with the same rank share the cash prize.
- Each receives a medal and a certificate.
- 5+ students sharing a rank receive gifts worth Rs.1,000 each, a medal, and a certificate.
School Awards:
- Class toppers are given medals.
- The top 3 receive gold, silver, and bronze medals in classes of 10+ students.
- The gold medal is awarded to the top student in classes with 5-9 students.
- The top 3 receive gold, silver, and bronze medals in sections with 10+ students.
- Participation certificate for all.
- Merit certificate for second-level participants.
- Top 25 rankers in each class/Olympiad exam in each of the 21 zones receive Distinction Medals.
