Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE)

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) is the manages school education in Maharashtra, including up to Class 10 (SSC) and Class 12 (HSC). The board sets the syllabus, approves textbooks, and conducts the board exams for Class 10 and Class 12.

2.0History & Background of the MSBSHSE

The MSBSHSE was formed under the Maharashtra Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Boards Act of 1965, and formally started functioning from January 1, 1966.
The board was created to bring standard rules for secondary (10th) and higher secondary (12th) and  uniformity in education across the state of Maharashtra. Over time it has grown to cover many schools and helped students finish their Class 10 and Class 12 exams smoothly.
It also has several divisional boards (for Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, etc.) to manage the large number of students and schools across the state. 

3.0Latest Updates / Notifications on the MSBSHSE

  • The board has released the exam timetables for both SSC (Class 10) and HSC (Class 12) for February 2026 onwards. 

4.0Role & Functions of the Board (MSBSHSE)

  • Set and approve curriculum and syllabus for secondary and higher secondary levels. 
  • Approve and publish textbooks for schools under its jurisdiction. 
  • Conduct the board examinations (SSC & HSC), fix exam dates, manage results. 
  • Grant affiliation/recognition to schools and manage standards of education.
  • Maintain records, announce results, work on improving quality of education in the state. 

5.0Major Examinations Conducted by the MSBSHSE

  • SSC (Secondary School Certificate) for Class 10: This exam is conducted yearly for students in Class 10. The exam covers all the prescribed subjects and is usually conducted in the month of February.
  • HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate) for Class 12: They are conducted yearly for students in Class 12 in various streams (Science, Commerce, Arts).
  • Supplementary/Improvement Exams: This exam is for students who wish to improve their scores or havent passed the examination in the regular attempt. Ths is generally conducted after the declaration of the results in the month of May.

6.0MSBSHSE Syllabus & Textbooks

The subject-wise and chapter-wise details of the curriculum for the schools affiliated with the board is published by the MSBSHSE.

Textbooks are approved by the board and available for different mediums (Marathi/English) depending on your school.

As mentioned before the MSBSHSE board conducts board exams for the class 10 and Class 12 students. For all the other classes, the exams are conducted by the local schools according to the syllabus prescribed by the board. Below are the exam related dates for the class 10 students:

9.0Eligibility & Application Process

  • Regular students: If you are studying in a school affiliated with MSBSHSE, your school will register you for SSC (Class 10) or HSC (Class 12) exams.
  • Private / Ex-school candidates: If you are not in regular school or want to appear privately, you’ll need to apply through the board’s process, filling forms, submitting fees and meeting deadlines.
  • Make sure your details (name, roll number, school, medium) are correct when applying.

10.0Resources for Students

  • Previous Year Question Papers: Practice old exam papers to understand how questions are asked. 
  • Model Papers/Sample Tests: Solve sample papers as if you are in real exam conditions.
  • Answer Keys/Solutions: Use them after solving to check your answers and learn from mistakes.
  • Study Tips / Preparation Strategy:
    • Make a daily schedule: allocate subject-wise time each day.
    • Understand concepts instead of just memorising.
    • Solve at least one full paper under timed conditions.
    • Revise regularly, especially topics you find difficult.
    • Stay healthy: good sleep, nutrition and short breaks help during exam prep.

The syllabus and textbooks are published on the board’s official website and your school will have details.

Exams are available in Marathi, English (and possibly other approved mediums) depending on your school’s medium.

Use past years’ question papers, work on model papers, practise under timed conditions, focus more on weaker topics, make a study schedule and revise regularly.

The board arranges supplementary/improvement exams. You can appear to improve your marks or clear missed papers (check latest board notification for process).
