The UP Board is the first education board established in India. It was set up in 1921 by an act of the United Provinces Legislative Council in Prayagraj.

Before its formation, the University of Prayagraj served as the examining body for these levels. The UPMSP was established to ensure uniformity and standardisation in secondary and senior secondary education across the state. Notably, the board adopted the 10+2 examination system from its inception. Today, the UPMSP is a massive organisation that manages the academic future of approximately 50–70 lakh students annually.
