A wooden block performs SHM on a frictionaless surface with frequency, `v_0`. The block carries a charge +Q on its surface. If now a uniform electric field `vecE` is switched-on as shown, then the SHM of the block will be

A

(a) of the same frequency and with shifted mean poistion.

B

(b) of the same frequency and with the same mean poistion

C

(c) of changed frequency and with shifted mean poistion.

D

(d) of changed frequency and with the same mean poistion.

The correct Answer is:
A

The frequency of SHM performed by wooden block is `v_0=(1)/(2pi)sqrt(k/m)`

when electric field is switched on, the value of k and m is not affected and therefore the frequency of SHM remains the same. But as an external force QE starts acting on the block towards right, the mean poistion of SHM shifts towards right by `(QE)/(k)`
correct option is (a).

A 2.0-kg pistol fires a 1.0-g bullet with a muzzle speed of 1000 m/s. The bullet then strikes a 10-kg wooden block resting on a horizontal frictionless surface. The block and the embedded bullet then slide across the surface. What is the speed of the "bullet + block" system immediately after the bullet is embedded in the block?
