A boat at anchor is rocked by waves whose crests are `100 m` apart and whose speed is `25 m//s`. These waves reach the boat once every :

A

2500s

B

75s

C

4s

D

0.25s

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
C

Key Idea: The distance between the two consecutive crests in transverse wave motion is called wavelength.
The boat bounces up, ie, it travels from crest to the consecutive crest along wave motion.
Wavelength=distance between two consecutive crests
`i.e,=lambda=100m`
Velocity of wave=25m/s
Hence, time in one bounce of boat `t=(lambda)/(v)=(100)/(25)=4s`

A boat anchor is rocked by waves whose consecutive crests are 100 m apart. If the wave speed of the moving crests is 20 m//s , calculate the frequency at which the boat rocks.

A women on the deck of a ship anchored in the ocean observes that the crests of passing waves are 11m apart and that the crest hits the bow of the ship every 3.0s . Calculate the velocity of the waves. Strategy: According to Eq. we can calculate the velocity u , provided the values of wavelength lambda and frequency v of the waves are known.
