Which is the most stable allotrope of sulphur?

A

Octahedral sulphur

B

Monoclinic sulphur

C

Plastic sulphur

D

Colloidal sulphur

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Octahedral sulphur (rhombic or a-sulphur) is the most stable allotrope of sulphur. It is stable at temperature below `95.6^circC`. Its specific gravity is 2.06. It melts at `114^circ C`. It is soluble in carbon disulphide. Its crystal structure contains cyclic S, rings packed in a manner which lead to the formation of rhombic crystals.
