Explain Surface Tension and surface energy.

Text Solution

Surface Tension : It is defined as the force per unit length acting at right angles to an imaginary line drawn on the free surface of liquid.
Surface tension (T) `=(F)/(l)`
where, F is force acting on imaginary line of length l.
The S.I. unit of surface tension is N/m and C.G.S. unit is dyne/cm.
Surface Energy : It is defined as the potential energy per unit area of the liquid surface under isothermal condition.
It is the extra energy that a liquid surface holds.
The S.I. unit of surface energy is joule and C.G.S. unit is erg.
