Let PQ reprsents a plane wavefront at any instant and at very large distance. This can be called as a primary wavefront. Now consider points A, B, C, D on PQ.
According to Huygen's principle, all the points on this wavefront will act as secondary sources of light sending out secondary wavelets in the forward direction with A, B, C, D as centres, draw spheres each of radius 'ct' where 'c' is the speed of light in the isotropic meddium, in time 't'. Each sphere will represent a secondary wavefront. The surface tangential to all such shperes is P' Q' at instant 't' It represent the new position for the wavefront after time 't'. There is no existence of secondary waves moving in the backward direction.
