State third law of thermodynamics. Give ...

State third law of thermodynamics. Give 'two' uses.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It states that the entropy of a perfectly ordered crystalline substance is zero at absolute zero temperature.
Thus, S = 0 at T = 0 for any perfectly ordered crystalline substance.
Usefulness :
(a) It helps in calculating thermodynamic properties and chemical affinity.
(b) It is used to determine the absolute entropy of any substance either in solid, liquid or gaseous at any desired temperature.
