Explain the following terms :
(a) Homopolymers
(b) Elastomers

Explanation

(a) The polymers which are obtained by the polymerisation of a single type of monomer are called homopolymers.

(b) These are rubber like solid polymers in which the polymer chains are held together by weakest intermolecular forces, for example, natural rubber, buna-S, buna-N etc. The weak binding forces permit the plymers to be stretched. A few 'cross links' are imtroduced in between the chains, which help the polymer to retract to its original position after the force is released as in vulacanised rubber.
