In laboratory , ammonia is prepared by heating a mixture of a calcium hydroxide and ammmonium chloride and moist ammonia is dried by passing over quicklime (CaO)

The tube in which ammonia is generatedb is fixed in a slanting position to prevent the water formed from running back and crack the whole tube. Concentrated sulphuric acid abd anhydrous calcium chloride are not used to dry ammonia because they react with it. Ammonia is collected by upward delievery as it lighter than air.
