The change in genetic material , gene pool and structure of gential organs .
It prevents interbreeding between population whether they are geographically isolated or living close together.
Types :
(a) Pre - mating or pre -zygotic isolating mechanism :
(i) In habitat isolation , members of a population living in the same region occupy different habitat . Thus , potential mates do not meet .
(ii) In seasonal isolation , members of population attain sexual maturity at different times , thus preventing interbreeding .
(iii) In ethological isolation , members of two populations have diferent mating behaviours . This prevents interbreeding .
(iv) In mechanical isolation , members of two populations have differences in the structure of reproductive organs . So interbreeding is not possible .
(b) Post mating or post - zygotic isolating mechanisms :
(i) Gemete mortality : Sperms transfer takes place but egg is not fertilized .
(ii) Zygote mortality : Egg is fertilized but zygote dies .
(iii) Hybrid sterility : Hybrids are sterile .
