For what value of x, the matrix [(5-x,x+...

For what value of `x,` the matrix `[(5-x,x+1),(2,4)]` is singular?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Matrix `A` is singular if `|A|` is `0`.
In the given matrix,
`A = |[5-x,x+1],[2,4]|`
`|A| = 4(5-x)-2(x+1) = 0`
`=>20-4x-2x-2 = 0`
`=>-6x = -18`
`=>x = 3`
So, for `x=3`, given matrix will be singular.
