How many degress of freedom have the gas...

How many degress of freedom have the gas molecules, if under standard conditions the gas density is `rho = 1.3 kg//m^3` and velocity of sound propagation o it is `v = 330m//s` ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`v = sqrt((gamma p)/(rho))`
`:. gamma = (rho v^2)/(p)= (1.3 xx (330)^2)/(1.013 xx 10^5)= 1.4`
`gamma = 1 + 2/f` (f = degree of freedom)
`1.4 = 1 +2/f`
Solving, we get
`f = 5`.
