A 10 H inductor carries a current of 20A...

A `10 H` inductor carries a current of `20A`. How much ice at `0^@C` could melted by the energy stored in the magnetic field of the inductor? Latent heat of ice is `22.6xx10^I3J//kg`

Text Solution

Energy stores is `1/2Li^2`
This energy is completely used in melting the ice.
Hence, `1/2Li^2=mL_f`
Here, `L_f=`latent heat of fusion
Hence mass of ice melted `m=(Li^2)/(2L_f)`
Substituting the values, we have
`m=((10)(20)^2)/(2(2.26xx10^3))`
`=0.88kg`
