In which of the following `ppi-dpi` bonding is possible ?

A

`CO_(3)^(2-)`

B

`PO_(4)^(3-)`

C

`NO_(3)^(-)`

D

`NO_(2)^(-)`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
B

Carbon , oxygen and nitrogen atoms do not have any d-orbital available . Therefore , in `CO_(2)^(2-), NO_(2)^(-) and NO_(3)^(-)`, there is no possibility of `p_(pi)-d_(pi)` type of bonding.
In `PO_(4)^(3-)` phosphorus atom have vacan d-orbital available which is used to form `p_(pi)-d_(pi)` type of bonding with p-orbital of oxygen atom.
